Trade: Letter to the European Commission on the review of the safeguard measures against imports of certain steel products

Published: 28 June 2019

Policies & Issues: Trade

In view of the review of the safeguard measures against imports of certain steel products, Orgalim - representing technology industries that are major downstream users of steel - has expressed its continued concern to the Commission regarding these measures. In this letter we question the real impact of the US national security measures on steel in causing a significant diversion of trade towards the EU, underline that the import quotas provided for in the safeguard measures are insufficient, and point out the need to also import certain steel products that are not made by the European steel industry. For these reasons we are asking that the safeguard measures are abolished, or that at least that the quotas are increased in order to meet the needs of steel users and avoid disruption of trade flows.
