Dear all,
As Europe charts its path out of the crisis, Germany is taking the reins of the EU presidency under the motto "together for Europe’s recovery". Much is at stake for Europe’s technology industries, as the EU’s industrial strategy is being (re)designed to catalyse a speedy and sustainable recovery. At the heart of this new strategy is a focus on Europe’s industrial ecosystems – a novel approach which holds considerable promise but has so far failed to properly reflect the critical role of advanced manufacturing for Europe’s competitiveness and resilience. This was my core message to the European Forum for Manufacturing last week, gathering MEPs from across the political spectrum, where I was invited to provide an industry view. The discussion will continue during our next "European industrial strategy in focus" virtual event this Friday, together with the German presidency, to which you are warmly invited.
Despite the continuing exceptional situation, it has been a very busy period for us across multiple policy fronts. We were happy once again to play an active part in the EU Sustainable Energy Week, and we hosted high-level virtual events on topics ranging from the Internal Market to Europe’s industrial strategy for a new phase of globalisation. We published the results of our GDPR survey of 280 European technology manufacturers and set out our position on EU-China relations, steel safeguard measures, sustainability requirements for batteries, the EU’s data strategy and the ECHA SCIP database, to name a few. More on this below. I was particularly pleased about our nomination to the Commission’s Stakeholder Cybersecurity Certification Group which allows us to play an active role in the preparation of the Union rolling work program amongst other issues involving the EU cybersecurity framework.
July typically marks the start of the summer lull in the EU policy calendar. But 2020 is a year of exceptions. In the coming weeks, a number of critical developments for the EU are set to take shape, starting with the recovery plan and new long-term budget at the European Council meeting next week. Together with our members, we will continue to champion the role of Europe’s technology industries in shaping a future that’s good. Notwithstanding the relentless activity levels ahead, I hope you will be able to enjoy some time off and recharge the batteries for what promises to be a lively “rentrée” indeed.
Stay well, stay safe,
