Dear all,
The holidays might be fast approaching but there is little sign of a slowdown in the worlds of politics and policy. From the UK election to impeachment proceedings in the US, there has been no shortage of headlines keeping us on the edge of our seats. And here in Brussels, the new European Commission kicked off its term at the start of the month, armed with an ambitious agenda for the future of the EU. The stakes have seldom been higher, and we at Orgalim remain as convinced as ever that our technology industries will play a pivotal role in shaping that future for the better.
President von der Leyen and her team have wasted no time in getting the ball rolling: not even two weeks in office and the Commission had already presented its proposal for a European Green Deal. With the aim of making Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, it rightly sets the bar high. And it will only deliver if industry and policy work together - in particular as technology innovation will be key to transforming climate challenges into drivers of prosperity. We outlined the core implementation measures needed to deliver on the Paris Agreement and turn decarbonisation challenges into opportunities in our position paper published earlier this month. Yet the road ahead will be far from easy, as clear from the struggles to find consensus on the way forward at both the European Council and the COP25 climate conference last week.
So it has been a sprint finish to what has been a rollercoaster year for Europe - and indeed for us at Orgalim. 2020 promises to maintain the breakneck pace: in the first few months alone, we can expect new Commission proposals on issues ranging from industrial strategy, to the European approach to AI and a European Climate Law. Not to mention the next phase of negotiations on the future EU-UK relationship that now seems likely to launch sooner rather than later. If 2019 was a year of decisions setting the course for the future of Europe, 2020 will be a year of action.
Until then, let me wish you a peaceful and relaxing holiday season - and may your 2020 be action-packed in the best possible way!
Best regards,
