Technology at Heart: Spotlight on Germany

For the new edition of Technology at ...

For the new edition of Technology at Heart, we visit Germany and zoom in on the mechanical engineering industry. Traditionally a powerhouse of innovation in the B2B sphere, the sector has in recent years been a key driving force in the digital transformation of industry more broadly. Now, German mechanical engineering companies are taking Industry 4.0 to the next level, leveraging digital and data to not only revolutionise their own processes but to reinvent how entire sectors operate.

Read how two companies are doing just that, in two different ways. We profile Heidelberg, a renowned printing press manufacturer transforming its business model by offering entire new data-driven services to its customers – helping them to raise their own productivity in the process. And we find out how Schunk, a leading provider of gripping and clamping technology, is using digital tech to open up entirely new automation possibilities for a range of sectors, helping them keep pace with rising global competition.

Plus we sit down with Thilo Brodtmann, Executive Director of the German mechanical engineering association VDMA (one of Orgalim’s three German members, alongside ZVEI representing the electrical engineering and electronics industry and WSM representing metal technology), to talk about challenges and opportunities on the horizon for the companies he represents as they enter the next phase of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
